Free motion sewing uses a basic sewing machine to ‘draw or paint’ with thread. It’s not only for quilting - it can be used for mending, applique, drawing, writing text, etc. This is a sewing technique with endless possibilities - great for learning to use your sewing machine in a fun new way, or if you're an artist wanting to expand your creative outlets.

This class is geared toward anyone looking to get a successful start with free motion sewing, but can be enjoyed by sewists of any level - from someone with only a basic knowledge of how to use their machine, to much more experienced sewists.

In this class, you'll learn:

  • which supplies to gather (do I need a specific presser foot, bobbin case, needles, etc? what materials can I sew on?)

  • how to easily adjust your sewing machine to go from standard sewing to free motion

  • tension troubleshooting tips

  • a project prompt to get you started and keep you going while you're learning

  • ideas and inspiration for how to incorporate this into your art practice

Every sewing machine is different and every sewist is, too. Much of this technique is learned through trial and error, so keep it fun and keep going with it! I will use a few different sewing machines for demonstration and offer general guidelines that can be adapted to your specific needs.
